Why kevsmill tutoring?

Our approach is multi-sensory and play-based and this will improve your child’s math skills. When we use manipulatives and play math games we build foundations and critical thinking. Students are routinely tasked to teach what they are learning, to prove their solution and strategy, to speak with confidence. From Edgar Dale’s research:

“WE REMEMBER 10% of what we read 20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 50% of what we see and hear 70% of what we discuss with others 80% of what we personally experience 95% or what we teach others”

Students need to feel joy and be playful in order to learn. They will not do the hard work necessary if they are not motivated, and playfulness drives people.

People need to use their body and to communicate mathematically. My job is to ask the quality questions that guide them. At times I do offer learning scaffolds (and they can be large ones) but my goal is always to lead them toward being independent.

Most importantly, we meet students at their point of need, allowing them to build resilience as they feel driven to challenge themselves.

Enjoying Math

Math is not a set of tasks to endure. Students will experience joy not only about improving their scores and alleviating anxiety, but also about the wonders of the relationships between numbers and patterns.
